A deliquent's own story

The Jack-Roller is one of the most famous studies carried out by the Chicago School of Sociology. It's a personal account by a young deliquent about the reasons for his criminality. The study brings us close to the motivations and the reasoning of a criminal and also paints a striking portrait of life in the inner city and the social inequalities present in the 1930's which are still persist nowdays.

Surprisingly, it is a very good book and an easy read (done in one day). A must-read for folks marrying someone with kids. Although the story starts out in the 1930's, the same dreadful situations and scenarios still applies today. A great book for social workers and police officers who deal with juvenile delinquency.

This is a very interesting read and puts you into the mind of a young jack-roller. Don't know what a jack-roller is? Pick up a copy of this book and you'll learn quick enough. The book is a quick and enjoyable read. If you are interested in sociology or criminology, this is a classic read.

The next generation of poker tells.

As someone who enjoys reading (and collecting) poker books as much as playing poker, I have read almost every important poker book ever written. Occasionally a new book is published that changes the game. Over the last 15 years there have been about 10 such books. Interestingly, the books published in the area of poker tells have been marginal at best. Some poker tell books have been very basic, very general, and sometime just plain incorrect. Zach Elwood's book, Reading Poker Tells, is the first major contribution to the subject since Caro's book, which has been showing its age for several years now. I consider Navarro's book a solid contribution with some helpful material, but fraught with many problems not worth outlining in this review. Given the high price of some new strategy books, I'm frankly surprised this material is being given away for $20.

Reading Poker Tells gives a lot of well-deserved credit to Caro's original work, but adds important structure and many new observations. Many of these observations are known by serious players, but have never been printed. The structure of the book is divided into three main categories: waiting-for-action tells, during-action tells, and post-bet tells. One great insight in the book is that traditional tells can mean different things in different contexts (even from the same player). As I read the book there were a few times I was struck with horror realizing that I do some of the very things that Elwood outlines. As a fairly experienced player I was always aware of "Caro tells," but there is a new generation of tells that good players have figured out. This book exposes many of them. Just as the books written by Brunson, Sklansky, Harrington, Miller, and others made the game tougher, this book will do the same. Reading Poker Tells is not optional reading.

The book also provides good defense and offense (if you so choose) in the area of angle shots. Although there is no book singly dedicated to categorizing angle shots, this book does a good job in the area of tells and betting/folding manipulation. The author's distain for some of these maneuvers is clear. In fact, the book manifests an undercurrent of distain for many aspects of the game. Perhaps that is why the material is being published. My only wish is that the book would have been longer and more extensive. Let's hope that Mr. Ellwood continues to enjoy the game enough to write a sequel, or at least an expanded second edition.

Excellent Book!

This book is simply one of the best written regarding the subject of poker tells. The author has put in a ton of work in studying tells at the tables, and put everything into a organized, detailed, easy and focused read. Two things really stuck out that make this book great. 1. The author separates tells into distinct moments of a poker hand, and where he has found them, depending on where the action in the hand is. 2. When he speaks about certain tells, Elwood describes what the player might be trying to say with his action and what the player might actually be saying with his tells.

Overall, one of the best contributions to poker tells that have been shared, and a must-read for the serious, or even casual player.

Oh my! This book is excellent!

As a tournament poker player I believe one of my key strengths is reading poker tells. In fact, I used my reading ability of opponents to win over $100,000 at the WSOP Main Event in 2011.

I just finished reading this book and I am very impressed. I have read Caro and Navarro, as I consider them the best in the business. But, Elwood has provided a more practical way to identify strength and weakness in your opponents. He does this by breaking up tells into 3 key sections, and labeling them either as a sign of strength or weakness. These 3 areas are:
Waiting for action tells
During action tells
Post bet tells

And, the examples in each section are excellent! Because the examples are things that you will recognize from your opponents (or done by you) and perhaps you weren't sure how to interpret them. It is also simple to understand the reasoning for your opponents actions when you read this book.

There are also sections on Verbal tells and Deception.

Overall, this is a real world, practical guide to reading poker tells. I recommend it.

Carey S. Ryan is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She is co-author of Data Analysis: A Model Comparison Approach (2nd ed., 2009) with Charles M. Judd and Gary H. McClelland.

Is this really a $2.99 USD ebook?

I am taking a trip under the seas and to expect the moon to shine (book cover) and expect I would get some kind of below average standard occult (book) styled firing, or someone preaching at my door that I really wanted to bam the door and shut them, and guess what.. (there is a tiny sense of that in this book so ya, and that could be that little bit.. eh well)

This book is just amazing to its end, and they not only explain the quote that they choose in a very crystal clear way that really shows the clarity at the material they understand, and from their words, I can throughly tell that they understand their material very well, and did a lot of self reflecting and self journey. A lot of previously personal work needs to be done in order to come up with anything of wisdom, and it looks like that the book reflects their work very well. Whether this stuff is a collaborative effort or not I do not know, but if it is, then detailed discussions and experience sharing are needed, and those who contributed must be very high standard people who are truly and faithfully willing to forward their ideas and experience without much bias. If that is only a few people's work.. um, maybe God can do that. Just, maybe.

Absolutely mavelous work indeed, way above the price it is being sold. A lot of pondering need to be done without much excessive text. I came through materials that got way more text but all is empty emotional outburst rather than truly look at the core of the issue, or just some prejudged fantasy.

This has been a interesting journey following this latest claim to be a member of the illuminati . with the first book i was somewhat optimistic this was something legitimate , then they started selling the cheapest of costume jewelry , that wasn't fit to be sold in a dollar store . The first book was most interesting and seems to have some occult promise , but this latest book , just really confirmed this group is just a hoax . there is nothing in the book of any value , one half of it are a collection cheap popular famous quotes , that do nothing more than fill of the book . the rest is just rambling nothingness . at best this could be a 1 star self help book . the really sad part are the 5 star people who are singing the praises of a 8 th grade level prose in the hope of somehow being picked to be one of the chosen illuminati . don't waste your time life of money on this . it is a joke

It is a scholarly reconstruction, complete with historical perspective, of the life of a man who managed to revolutionize surgical practices and, indeed, the entire field of surgery, while battling the enduring and debilitating consequences of self-inflicted medical experimentation. To make surgery more efficient for surgeons, safer, and freer of pain for patients, Halsted began to explore various methods of anesthesia, including the then recently discovered drug, cocaine. He became addicted. Failure to kick that addiction played havoc with his professional life and ultimately forced him to turn optimistically to heroin, generally thought at the time to be an effective treatment. The result was lifelong heroin dependence, despite which he was eventually able to not only function but also continue a brilliant career. About the Author
Dr. Gerald Imber is a well known plastic surgeon and authority on cosmetic surgery, and directs a private clinic in Manhattan. An early proponent of prevention and minimally invasive procedures, he has devised many popular anti-aging techniques, and is attending surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital and assistant clinical professor of surgery at Weill-Cornell School of Medicine.

Dr. Imber has published many scientific papers and is a regular lecturer at professional meetings. He is also the author of a number of “beauty books” and has written on many subjects for varied publications such as Departures, and The Wall Street Journal, and appears regularly on network television.

A heroic historical page-turner

Dr. Gerald Imber will change your views of what it means to be a doctor and a patient, to be sick and to be well. While tracing the convoluted evolution of modern surgery, Imber also chronicles the prodigious, twisted career of the greatest surgeon in American history. As he modernized medicine - introducing such life-sparing novelties as anesthesia, scrubsuits, handwashing, sterlized instruments, even while the medical establishment strenuously resisted his innovations -- Halsted himself descended into a dark, secretive abyss of cocaine abuse and closeted homosexuality. Yet Halsted's techniques and his teaching were so unimpeachably sound, they remain the model for practicing and teaching surgery today. Halsted's story is written with such clarity, it will appeal universally - along the way, Imber's tale encompasses, among other matters, 19th-century American and European history, and some commendably high and lamentably low examples of the human condition. It is a wonder Halsted never had a biography before; we should be very grateful that Dr. Gerald Imber took on this daunting task. His impressive scholarship never gets in the way of good story telling. The charm, humor, and authority of the author's voice shines warmly throughout the sprawling narrative.

Strangely fascinating

By far the best biography I have read. I did not have to skip over any boring parts or risk falling asleep. It was strange to realize that not only did people not always use sterile practices but that within the last 100 years people did not use sterile practices. Dr Halsted snd his peers were the creators of modern medicine as we still know it, and their story is a fascinating one.

Fascinating look into how modern surgery developed

"Genius on the Edge" is an interesting book describing the medical developments (especially in surgery) during the period of about 1846 to 1922. The first third of the book mainly focused on what surgery was like before this period, on the developments that occurred from 1846 to 1889, and how they affected Halsted's medical training and prompted his surgical innovations. The rest of the book was more a series of short biographies of men who worked with Halsted and the developments they (and he) brought to the practice of surgery from 1889-1922. It also covered Halsted's marriage and how he lived.

The author didn't assume that the reader was familiar with medical terms and so concisely worked that information in as was needed to understand the innovations. He did an excellent job of making the topic fascinating and easy to understand. I found the book a quick read despite the amount of information packed into it. I also liked how the author wove the general technological changes and social setting into the story so we could see how society effected the advances and how Halsted and the others influenced society in turn. While the book mostly focused on American surgery (especially that done at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), the author also brought up related advances over in Europe.

There were only a couple of brief descriptions of actual surgery, so most of the book probably wouldn't bother those who get queasy by descriptions of operations.

Some of the topics covered were: the introduction of general anesthetics, heat sterilization, and antiseptics to make surgery safer. How medical training had been done and how it changed (both in medical school and post-graduate) under the influence of Halsted and his friends at Johns Hopkins. The creation of out-patient clinics, the beginnings of bacteriology and the germ theory, the change from quick and brutal surgery to gentle, careful handing during surgery, the introduction of surgical gloves, of using cocaine as a local anesthetic, emergency blood transfusion, surgery of the brain, and much more.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and interesting book to those interested in how medicine (especially surgery) has developed into what we take for granted today.
