Landmark text on the topic

I am a researcher in the field of visual optics. I first obtained a copy of this book nearly 5 years ago, when I was a lecturer at the University of Auckland. I thought the book was excellent then and the subsequent passage of time has reinforced my view.
I refer to my copy constantly. When I am dealing with a new and complicated topic as part of my work my first instinct is to check if Smith and Atchison have anything to say on the topic, and I'm usually rewarded. They nearly always provide good introductory material and analytical tools. The book contains very basic level material which is suitable for undergraduates in the area of clinical optics and develops these concepts to postgrad and research levels.
The section on aberrations is extremely useful, although it does not use the Zernike polynomials that have become popular in the last few years, it has still allowed me to do useful analysis of my data. I have also found the sections on optical quality calculations extremely useful, and the appendices on schematic eyes are the most complete I've come across in the literature.
I look forward to many subsequent editions of this text. An excellent book for researchers and students.

Good for Ophthalmic Optics

This book has good content, particularly for ophthalmic optics. The description of optical aberrations is useful. However, the treatment of paraxial optics is confusing. The authors should avoid the use of symbols that are not writeable (e.g. Cyrillic), and obscure Greek letters. All in all, a useful book.

I know what a book in "good condition" is, but...

The book I received was excessively highlighted in. The product information says "may have some highlighted parts" which was completely okay with me, but my goodness this book is just columns of yellow. Highlighting doesn't detract from reading the text for me, but if it does for you I HIGHLY recommend not purchasing this book. Otherwise, the condition was as good as any other used book I've ever had. For the price I'm not asking for much, but they should state that the books are practically stained yellow.

If anyone wants to find the first edition, it's not on Amazon currently, you can look elsewhere with search engines though.Search for the 1970 edition, that would be the first.

Least favorite science text

I found this to be one of the worst science texts I have ever used. All of the pictures are minimally labeled too. I had to ask my instructor what most of the things in the diagrams and pictures were, then label them myself.

About the author Moses Marango was born in Bungoma , Kenya and educated in Kimwanga R.C. then Friends' School Kamusinga before joining JKUAT for his Bsc. in Applied Mathematics and Physics. He later pursued his Msc. in Project Management & Governance at The Keller Graduate School of Management in Houston, Texas. He also studied Electronics Engineering Technology at NIT- Houston. While at JKUAT, he was elected as a student leader in various capacities and as a result, served on the Board - Faculty of Science, University Senate and Council as well. He further served on the 8-4-4 Review Commission- JKUAT Chapter. Throughout his career, Marango has fearlessly defended the voiceless and championed for the oppressed. His father worked for Kenya Railways while his mother sold eggs, sukuma wiki, and sweet potatoes at the local trading center to supplement the family income. He currently runs his business between Houston and Nairobi. He is married to Charity Alice, a Proverbs 31 woman.

GET TO THE POINT ALREADY!!! OH BROTHER!!!

This text book is a joke! I study psychology, and personality is a very interesting aspect of the discipline. The writer of this book is too wordy. You will spend so much time reading about one subject, and they repeat the same point OVER and OVER. I want it fast and easy. I don't have all the time in the world.

If there is an aspect of personality that interests you, just go directly to the source. The book deals with a variety of topics, from evolutionary psychology, big five traits, psycho-social development and psychoanalytic psychology. I'm sure you are bound to find something that won't waste your time. I like my books to get right to the point.

SAVE MONEY AND BUY OLDER EDITIONS!!! If you find a textbook you want, go back a few editions until you can find it for under 10 dollars. Most of the time, new editions are just a scam to keep the price up!!! I do this with so many medical and pharmacology texts so that I don't waste hundreds of dollars. The material is basically the same. The only difference is new research that could recommend new techniques or uses for drugs isn't there. But you can always look that up online or in a scholarly journal. I mean, someone who graduated with a M.D. or PhD ended their education with that book, so you're not the only one a little behind. Save money and buy older editions.

I had to get this book for my online college course. The reason I cannot stand reading it is because the print is SO SMALL. if it wasn't for that, I would have given it 3 stars.

I also don't think it is a very well written book where one can easily understand the concepts.

Dreadful book for a fun class. Never opened and never read because it's just so overwhelming. Hate the layout of the book and hate how it reads so I just never used it. If you're taking a class for personality, just pay attention to your teacher! :)

I read and sent this book too two of my friends. They liked it very much. Testimonials of people that was faced with cancer and was healed. I would recommend this book and read the people story's who have faced cancer. I had cancer in 2008, I'm cancer free for 7 years. My story is in this book.
