The Hellfire Club became popular during an age of scandal. Standards of respectability had become middle class – a middle class who knew nothing of art and literature and whose outlook was bound by a set of stereotyped conventions. Respect for the monarchy, religion, or the ideals of decency and morality? Bah humbug. The club's members – “mad geniuses who. . . could do anything from writing double entendre verses in Greek to ruining an opposing statesman by a clever satirical sketch” – set out to ridicule and destroy these conventions and at times they almost succeeded.

The originator and guiding presence of the Hellfire Club was Sir Francis Dashwood – son of a grim and fiercely ruthless baronet, heir to one of the great fortunes of the time, and George III's intimate friend. Possessing a flair for politics and a proclivity for the profane, it is largely because of his influence that the Hellfire Club was to eventually count among its members the Prime Minister of England, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Lord Mayor of London, the First Lord of the Admiralty, the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury, several of England's greatest artists and poets, the Prince of Wales, and Benjamin Franklin.

Good Research and Intriguing Book

The Hellfire Club is/was one of those topics that people like myself have wanted to know about. This was a time when the nobility held a position that could hardly be touched by the common man. They could get by with so many atrocities and they did. The ranks of The Hellfire Club included those high up in the government influencing the politics of its time. They deflowered a large number of young women under the mantle of immorality. The Marquis De Sade would have been proud of them.
Now a book of this type could be dull and boring unless the hand of a writer who has a skillful mind. Daniel P Mannix takes the subject, fleshed it out, and creates an expose that's intriguing. He presents the personalities in the inner circle and gives life. The American Revolution and Ben Franklin are also part of the story. The club's trouble when the dirt hit the fan and the riots that followed are an integral part of the narrative. Sordid details are not spared with pruriency kept within limits. Personalities, facts, descriptions are brought out in a very readable style so all can understand.
One warning would be the cost of this for Kindle readers - it's high. And the same goes for other books by Mr. Manning. If you don't mind the cost, you'll find rewarding reading.

a magical story that makes you feel like you belong

To all my english-speaking friends and book-lovers - if you are looking for a fantastic and mystical book series that is very different from what you've read so far, go and fetch this one. Not the typical vampire stories - there are other mystical creatures out there that make this story so worth telling.

I simply love it!

The story robbed my heart from the very beginning...a sweet young American girl (17y) caught in the mysteries of love and Scottish myths! One surprise and secret hits the other. All set in the magical landscapes of Scotland. Emma is forced by destiny to move to the Isle of Skye and leave her past behind - but that past is going to get back at her in ways she has never thought of. She isn't just the ordinary girl she always thought she'd be. There is more to her story than the eye can see and if it wasn't for Calum (the magical love of her life) she'd probably drown in sorrows. He gives her sense and a reason to live after she thought she'd lost everything. They both save one another in this world in all ways possible. To me it's a gem among stones!

Marah Woolf is one incredible author! Her story is set in a truly beautiful place and her style of writing is the most detailed and perfect description I've ever known. I felt like I was right there on the Isle of Skye and being part of this adventure. Her stories are fascinating and inspiring! She is thoughtful, talented and sweet - and I thank her for the #SilverMoonSaga.

I love the moonlight saga

I love the moonlight saga . Marah takes me each time with a new world . And she describes places as authentic as if you were standing right in the middle . Feelings between Emma and Calum are downright palpable and you can feel how closely the two are linked . One must have the moonlight saga read easily . And I'd like to see it as a film . Great story and a new world . I love it!!! 10 *

Maybe this is one of the lesser known books on the Western Mystery Tradition; I was lucky find a reprint in a discount bookstore over a decade ago. Published some time ago, before the New Age 'explosion', its presentation isn't showy, and it doesn't pretend to provide all the 'secrets'. What it does do, however, is provide a serious introduction Western Magical thought outlining the psychological and philosophical foundations of the movement - as Butler notes in the endnote, sometimes with a tantalising lack of specific detail - but you can be sure that what you read here is written for the right reasons. Read in conjunction with The Magician: His Training and Work, by the same author.
