A Tale of Three Metaphors

Three metaphors guide this excellent little book. The "Old Public Administration" featured the metaphor of "rowing." As the authors put it (page 169): ". . .the purpose of government was simply to deliver services efficiently, and that problems were to be addressed primarily by changing the organization's structure and control systems." The "rowing" refers to the hard work of public administration delivering services.

The "New Public Management" uses a different metaphor, "steering." The authors note (page 13): "They are urged to 'steer, not row,' meaning they should not assume the burden of service delivery themselves, but, wherever possible, should define programs that others would then carry out, through contracting or other such relationships. . . .New Public Management [NPM] relies heavily on market mechanisms to guide public programs."

And, finally, the preferred metaphor of the Denhardts, "serving." Their "New Public Service" would focus on "listening" to and "serving" the public. They observe that NPM forgets who owns the boat. That is, government belongs to the people, not the "steerers"; ". . .public administrators should focus on their responsibility to serve and empower citizens as they manage public organizations and implement public policy." (page 23).

One of the more interesting themes that are addressed in this volume: NPM looks at people as customers and tries to figure out how best to make consumers satisfied; the authors of this volume argue that we are to serve citizens, not create satisfied customers. In a democracy, citizenship means something and the people should be engaged through the New Public Service. With its market-oriented perspective, according to the authors, NPM does not consider citizenship as a critical factor.

This is a well written and thought provoking essay, well worth reading by those interested in contemporary public administration, by the idea of public service, and by those wondering how democracy can thrive in a complex organizational world.

Allgemeines Ziel des Buches ist, den Roboter als kognitives Modell und damit als wissensbasierten Agenten zu konzeptionalisieren und dieses Agentenmodell durch rechnerbasierte Technologien in prozessualer und funktionaler Hinsicht zu einem kognitiven Robotersystem auszugestalten. Das Ziel eines solchen Ansatzes liegt in der Steigerung des systemischen Intelligenzquotienten (IQS) des Robotersystems.

Erreichbar wird dieses Ziel durch eine Konzeptionalisierung auf Basis einer Kognitionstheorie, der (Aus)implementierung dieser Modelle durch den Einsatz der Cognitive Computing Technologie unter Verwendung der Programmiersprache Java und der Validierung dieser Roboterl�sungen im Rahmen von Simulationen.

Das Buch wendet sich gleicherma�en an Studierende, Fachleute aller Fachrichtungen als auch den interessierten Leser. Matthias Haun ist als Business Developer, Solution Manager und Principal eines gro�en Beratungshauses f�r die Entwicklung sogenannter „kognitiven L�sungen“ (cognitive solutions) verantwortlich, bei denen es darum geht, Organisationen (St�dte, Kommunen, Industrie-unternehmen) als wissensbasierte bzw. kognitive Modelle zu konzeptionalisieren und diese Modelle mit kognitiven Systemen (kognitive Roboter, Pr�ventionssysteme etc.) „intelligent“ auszugestalten. Au�erdem leitet er ein interdisziplin�res Forschungsprogramm, in dessen Rahmen die zuk�nftigen Paradigmen und Technologien des Cognitive Computings durch die Orchestrierung „klassischer“ und neuer L�sungsans�tze konzeptionalisiert und durch Hard- und Softwarel�sungen realisiert werden. Zuvor zeichnete er sich in den letzten 25 Jahren f�r die Entwicklung zahlreicher intelligenter Pr�ventions-, Interventions- bzw. Lastly, the generated data identified criteria for each stage that are more important than the others. Also, differences among different age groups, and between the two genders that took part in this study were found. The field research conducted in this study clearly showed that differences between the stages of the Employee-Life-Cycle can be seen. It disclosed that the Employment-Phase is the most important stage for employees where the criteria “challenging tasks, to be intellectually challenged, and enjoyable work” are the most important factors. Moreover, it shows that the stage “After-Employment” of the Employee-Life-Cycle is underestimated by the current Employer Branding practices.

About the Author
Fyodor (known to his family as Gordon Lyon) authored the open source Nmap Security Scanner in 1997 and continues to coordinate its development. He also maintains the SecLists.Org, Insecure.Org, SecTools.Org, SecWiki.Org, and Nmap.Org security resource sites and has authored seminal papers on remote operating system detection and stealth port scanning. He is a founding member of the Honeynet project, former president of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR), and technical advisory board member for Qualys and AlienVault. He is also authored or co-authored the books "Nmap Network Scanning", "Know Your Enemy: Honeynets" and "Stealing the Network: How to Own a Continent".

The only Nmap book you need to read

Earlier this year Fyodor sent me a pre-publication review copy of his new self-published book, Nmap Network Scanning (NNS). I had heard of Fyodor's book when I wrote my 3 star review of Nmap in the Enterprise in June, but I wasn't consciously considering what could be in Fyodor's version compared to the Syngress title. Although the copy I read was labelled "Pre-Release Beta Version," I was very impressed by this book. Now that I have the final copy (available from Amazon) in my hands, I am really pleased with the product. In short, if you are looking for *the* book on Nmap, the search is over: NNS is a winner.

I've reviewed dedicated "tool" books before, including titles about Snort, Nessus, and Nagios. NNS dives into the internals of Nmap unlike any other title I've read. Without Nmap author Fyodor as the author, I think any competitor would need to have thoroughly read the source code of the application to have a chance at duplicating the level of detail Fyodor includes in NNS.

Instead of just describing how to use Nmap, Fyodor explains how Nmap works. Going even further, he describes the algorithms used to implement various tests, and why he chose those approaches. The "Idle Scan Implementation Algorithsm" section in Ch 5 is a great example of this sort of material. I will probably just refer students of my TCP/IP Weapons School class to this part of NNS when we discuss the technique!

One of the best parts of NNS, mentioned but explained in no other text, is the Nmap Scripting Engine (NSE). Ch 9 is all about NSE, with a brief intro to Lua and excellent documentation of using and building upon NSE. Beyond this groundbreaking material readers will find many examples of Nmap case studies from users. This and other sections help make NNS a practical book, showing how people use Nmap in their environments for a variety of purposes.

If you use Nmap, for any reason, you should buy this book. Everyone (except author Fyodor) will learn something about network reconnaissance from this text.

Valuable book about an invaluable security tool

The 1962 song Wipe Out, with its energetic drum solo started, was the impetus for many people to take up playing the drums. Similarly, Nmap, the legendary network scanner, likely interested many in the art of hacking, and for some, started a career for security professionals and hackers. Nmap and its creator Fyodor need no introduction to anyone on Slashdot. With that, Nmap Network Scanning: The Official Nmap Project Guide to Network Discovery and Security Scanning, is a most useful guide to anyone interested in fully utilizing Nmap.

One may ask, why spend $50 on this book, when the Nmap Reference Guide provides a significant amount of the basic information needed to use the tool, especially since the reference guide is both free, and well written. The reference guide is included in the book in chapter 15, and takes up 41 pages. And for those that are cash strapped, the free reference guide is the way to go.

In addition, the web site for the book notes that about half of the content is available in the free online edition. The most useful information is in the book in chapters exclusive to the print edition, which includes Detecting and Subverting Firewalls and Intrusion Detection System, Optimizing Nmap Performance, Port Scanning Techniques and Algorithms, Host Discovery, and troubleshooting.

The main benefit of the buying the book is that it has the collected wisdom of Fyodor's, in addition to numerous real-world scenarios, and Nmap commands not documented elsewhere. At over 400 pages, the books 15 chapters provide the reader with everything they need to know about using Nmap to the fullest.

Chapter 1 starts with an overview of the history of Nmap and how it came to be. As to the question of whether port scanning is legal, the author writes that it is best to avoid the debate and its associated analogies. He advises that it's best to avoid ISP abuse reports and criminal charges, by not annoying the target network administrators in the first place. Chapter 1 provides a number of practical suggestions on just how to do that.

A complaint against Nmap it that is has often been blamed for crashing systems. Chapter 1 shows that the reality is that Nmap will rarely be the primary cause of a system crash. The truth is that many of the systems that crashed as a result of an Nmap scan were likely unstable from the outset, and Nmap either pushed them over the top or they coincidentally crashed at the same time as the Nmap scan.

An ironic incident detailed in chapter 3 is when someone from the information security department of Target Corp. complained to the author that he felt the Nmap documentation was particularly directed at his organization; given the use of the term target. He requested that the Nmap documentation be changed from targetto example. The section on target enumeration in the book shows the author did not take that request to heart.

Another example of where the book goes beyond what is in the reference guide is where the author shows the most valuable TCP ports via his probe of tens of millions of IP addresses across the internet. Not surprisingly, ports 80 23 and 443 were the top three most commonly open TCP ports. It is surprising that other ports, which should have been secured long ago, are still as vulnerable as ever.

For the serious Nmap user, the book is worth purchasing just for the indispensable information in chapter 16, which is about optimizing Nmap performance. The chapter concludes with the output of a user who, with a customized Nmap command, was able to reduce his scan of a 676,352 IP address network from nearly a week to 46 hours.

Chapter 10 is also a fascinating chapter on the topic of detection and subverting of firewalls and IDS. The function of such tests on an internal network is to help an organization understand the dangers and risks of a real attack. Since it is not uncommon for firewalls to be accidentally misconfigured, or have rule bases that leak from far too many rules; such a test can be quite useful to any network.

Aside from the history and use of the program in the first chapter, the rest of the book is an extreme guide to maximizing the use of Nmap. It is written by a programmer and written for the technically astute. Anyone who wants to maximize their use of Nmap will find no better reference.

Everything you need to know about Nmap

Having the privilege of reviewing draft copies of this book over the past couple years, I think it will quickly become required reading for network engineers, system administrators, and anyone working in the computer security arena.

Fyodor, the developer of nmap, is the obvious choice to author a book on his project. This book, however, goes well beyond an expanded "man page" for the premier port scanning tool. Fyodor gives an insightful overview of TCP/IP (including some really beautiful graphs of IP headers). He also shows how to use nmap for network monitoring, to gain a better understanding of networks, and to test firewalls.

Consider this book a Rorschach test of sorts. If you want to learn how to inventory your network gear, this book has an answer. If you want to learn how to bypass firewalls and IDS, this book will help. If you need to test network security, this book will be required reading.
I have been using nmap for nearly a decade and there were still some great tips and tricks that I found for the first time in these pages.

About the Author
Todd Donovan (Ph.D., University of California, Riverside) is a professor of Political Science at Western Washington University. He teaches state and local politics; American politics, parties, campaigns, and elections; comparative electoral systems; and introductory research methods and statistics. His research interests include direct democracy, election systems and representation, political behavior, subnational politics, and the political economy of local development. He has been published extensively in academic journals; written a number of books on direct democracy, elections, institutions, and reform; and has received numerous grants and awards for his work. He is coauthor (with Ken Hoover) of THE ELEMENTS OF SOCIAL SCIENTIFIC THINKING, also published by Cengage Learning.

Daniel A. Smith (PhD, University of Wisconsin, Madison) is a professor of Political Science at the University of Florida and the former director of UF's Political Campaigning Program. In addition to teaching state and local politics, he offers courses on political parties and interest groups, direct democracy, and the politics of reform. He has published widely on voting rights and election law, campaign finance, direct democracy, political parties, and interests groups. He serves on the board of directors of the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center Foundation (BISCF), headquartered in Washington, D.C., and is the author of several books and over 50 articles and book chapters on American politics.

Tracy Osborn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on women and politics in U.S. state legislatures, Congress, and political behavior. Her recent book, How Women Represent Women: Political Parties, Gender, and Representation in the State Legislatures (Oxford University Press, 2012) examines how Democratic and Republican women represent women's issues under different legislative conditions. She has also published articles in Political Research Quarterly, American Politics Research, Politics & Gender, and other journals. She was named a Dean's Scholar by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa in 2012.

Christopher Z. Mooney (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Madison) is the Honorable W. Russell Arrington Professor of State Politics at the University of Illinois, Springfield. From 1999 to 2007, he served as the founding editor of STATE POLITICS AND POLICY QUARTERLY, the official journal of the State Politics and Policy section of the American Political Science Association. Mooney has authored dozens of books and articles related to legislative politics, morality politics, and policy diffusion. In addition, he often serves as a media commentator on state politics topics, including serving as a regular panelist on State Week in Review, a National Public Radio program broadcast statewide in Illinois. In 2010, in recognition of his scholarship and founding of SPPQ, the APSA endowed the annual Christopher Z. Mooney Award for the best PhD dissertation in the field of state politics.

David Punter is Professor of English at the University of Bristol. He has previously taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Fudan University in Shanghai, among other institutions. His recent publications include Postcolonial Imaginings (2000), Writing the Passions (2000), Gothic Pathologies (1998), and The Literature of Terror (2 vols., 1996). He has also published four volumes of poetry.Glennis Byron is Reader in English Studies at the University of Stirling. She has also taught at the University of Alberta in Canada. Her previous publications include Dramatic Monologue (2003), Letitia Landon: The Woman Behind L.E.L (1995), and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the Poetry of Love (1989).

The perfect book for anyone looking for a crash course in Gothic studies, with thoughtful, interesting summaries and several in-depth studies of canonical texts. Punter and Byron are well known authorities in the field; their clear, concise, humorous style makes reading this book a pleasure.

The Gothic

Puntner and Byron's "The Gothic" offers an introductory survey for 'advanced undergraduates and postgraduates.' What might not be clear, if you don't study the contents before purchase, is that each entry is brief, as are the essays on context and themes. Being that so much of the book consists of thumbnail sketches of elements of the Gothic, the dedicated reader should look elsewhere.

This information was a bit dated and I really didn't see any information regarding making $300 a day. I have many Facebook Pages and most of this information I already knew.. Wasn't much benefit.
