The REAL Story of Adam and Eve
By Amazon Customer
Mark Twain wrote this after his wife, Livy died. This was the dark period of his writing but this is an absolutely delightful retelling of the story of Adam and Eve. I found myself laughing out loud in many parts of it and also found a tear rolling down my cheek in others. I loved it! I much prefer it to the story in Genesis.

Interesting Take on Genesis from two different perspectives. Good humor that illustrates that some differences between the sexes never change from an 1800 perspective or today looking back at the dawn of mankind.

The book is nicely divided into two parts, one on basic physics concepts, the other on several sports. The only thing I missed is a quantitative evaluation of the sports themselves, but this is easily done with the material given. As a physics professor and a book author, I have to hand it to Hay. Nice job.

Timely reissue of the classic fantasy trilogy by Robin Jarvis, following on from the landmark publication of DANCING JAX, his first novel in a decade.

Dare to enter the Wyrd Museum, where fantasy meets the seriously sinister…

In a grimy alley in the East End of London stands the Wyrd Museum, cared for by the strange Webster sisters – and scene of even stranger events…

Forced to journey back to the past, he finds himself pitted against an ancient and terrifying evil, something which is growing stronger as it feeds on the destruction around it.

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-Neil's father has accepted a live-in job as the caretaker of the Wyrd Museum, an old house full of strange and macabre objects that is owned by three elderly sisters who are as disconcerting and fearful as the exhibits. While roaming in the Special Collections Room, Neil encounters a talking teddy bear that blackmails him into traveling back to the Blitz in London in order to rescue his four-year-old brother, Josh, who had been tricked by the magical bear. As Neil and Ted maneuver around London, meeting American soldiers, local people, and even a German spy, a demon breaks loose from the museum into the past as well, and, suddenly, in order to save the future and change the past, they must recapture it. Jarvis tries to do too many things with this story and ends up not doing any of them well. Time-travel fantasy and family drama are mixed in with horror-the descriptions of those killed by the demon are very graphic-and a dose of Nordic mythology and sentimentality. Hints are dropped about the origins and identities of the museum's owners, but only readers with a background in mythology will understand the references to weaving that they make. The plot involving Josh is dropped almost completely until the book's end when he magically reappears, and making one of the female characters an ambitious German spy pushes the whole thing just too far over the edge.

Enchanting
By EA Solinas
I'm a sucker for big fat kids' fantasy books (big fat adult fantasy books tend to throw me off) and I picked up "Woven Path" with great anticipation. I was not disappointed. Robin Jarvis, who wrote the great fantasy book "Dark Portal," weaves an intriguing fantasy story.
Neil Chapman is "our hero," a young man who comes to the Wyrd Museum (a pun on Weird?), a rather grimy and unimpressive building in the East End. Creepy hardly describes the odd museum, run by three old ladies who are... uh, creepy. Who are they? What are they?
Better brush up on Greek and Norse myths, as these bizarre old ladies are the Fates, who weave a cloth composed of the life-threads of all the people of the world into their future. When Neil steps into the Separate Collection, he is swept through time and space to London. In WW2. A scramble will result before Neil can hope to return, with some odd new friends...
The idea of a magical place being run by the Fates is an intriguing and original idea indeed, and Jarvis does it justice. The three are suitably creepy and strange, and the inner mood of their museum matches their personalities.
Neil is a better-than-usual book hero, a very realistic person with great reactions and some very good lines. And the character of Ted was sweet, nuff zed. Jarvis skillfully manages to make Ted believable and sympathetic, not juvenile or stupid.
The writing style is snappy where it needs to be and drawn out where it needs to be, with pretty good descriptions and characterization. I got confused a few times in this book, where the plot took a twist and I inadvertantly missed it, but the story flows well overall.
A wonderful read, and I cannot wait for "Raven's Knot"!

the woven path
By A Customer
This was the first time that I had read a Robin Jarvis book. From the moment that I picked the book up I was captivated by it and I could not bear to put it down. The struggle of the Ned, (sent to find Edie Dorkins in the time of the blitz) with his new friend, Ted, (who had been trapped inside a teddy for years) was heart warming. I have now followed the plight of the Webster sisters, Edie and Ned right through to the end of the third book and I enjoyed all three books thoroughly. I am now searching libraries and book shops for other Robin Jarvis titles. Read this book and you will be as captivated as I was. The Wyrd Museum never has a dull moment.

The Woven Path- a great pick!
By A Customer
The suspense, mystery, and wonder in this book are those which will thrill all. Dangerous spies, talking toys, a boy who is tangled up with destiny, souls, spirits, and demons all come together in this marvelous read. Who has been commiting all these crimes? How does Germany know the exact night to attack? How did Neil get thrown into the past, together with a talking toy? Who are the three women? An intriguing read-one which will not be forgotten soon.

Classical Sociological TheoryFrom Oxford University Press

In an accessible and thoughtful manner, this anthology--an update of Social and Political Theory: Classical Readings (1998)--introduces students to the key classic texts in social thought. In the second edition, Michael Kimmel focuses more specifically on the discipline of sociology, rather than melding classical sociological and political theories in one volume. Taking a serious look at the canonical texts, he presents a diverse range of thinkers who were critical to the development of sociological theory and offers a more inclusive classical canon that is informed by both the historical record and the needs of contemporary students.
Many of the classical theorists whose works are included here were much more influential than the canon suggested. For example, the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, Frederick Douglass, Margaret Fuller, and W.E.B Du Bois were widely disseminated and discussed in their time, yet they were pushed to the margins of the canon, declared to be derivative or second-rate. In attempting to set the record a bit straighter, Kimmel restores these and other forgotten thinkers to the positions they once held. The questions they posed are among the most vital theoretical and political questions of our era, evidence that classical social and political theory continues to speak to new generations of students about the issues that most affect their lives.
Features new to the second edition:
* Selections of key texts by Auguste Comte (Positive Philosophy of Auguste Comte); Edmund Burke (Reflections on the Revolution in France); John Dewey (Democracy and Education); and Elsie Clews Parsons (Women in Public Life)
* Stronger disciplinary focus within sociology

Classical Social Theory, Second Edition, is an ideal text for courses in the theory of sociology, the history of social theory, the history of political thought, and western philosophy.

The best soc theory textbook on the market
By M. Fridell
While some prolific academic authors are first and foremost great marketeers, this edited volume forces you to hand it to Kimmel. He's got substance. I cannot speak highly enough of this uniquely-essential theory textbook, and what it accomplishes within a multiparadigmatic discipline. Kimmel's Classical Sociological Theory text manages to provide original, representative readings, somehow chosen for their comprehensibility to undergraduate students, with short, clear introductions that get at the heart and substance of a discipline born in the Enlightenment and growing and fumbling through succeeding generations of Western social contestation, emancipation, stagnation and crises.

Reading this volume will allow Sociology and Political economy students to see and learn especially the foundational, contesting intercourse between liberal and conservative ideas and interests, and even a couple of radical ideas, all at stake in the elaboration of the of capitalist societies of the West. It's quite an accomplishment that scholars of both political sociology and gender will be especially pleased by this classical sociological theory compilation.

Kimmel is an expert in gender, and there are numerous feminist contributions in this multicultural classical theory textbook. Still, and although it contains Marx's "Communist Manifesto" pamphlet, a less-radical piece from WEB DuBois, and a surprisingly radical and stirring essay by Virginia Woolf, the volume could be stronger and needs to be supplemented on the early radical, sociological thinkers attempting to augment the Enlightenment legacy beyond its capitalist horizons. I know gender is Kimmel's expertise, but a couple of the early liberal feminist readings, while technically qualifying as multicultural, are just not all that engaging. I have substituted for some of those a few readings by F-M-C Fourier, Alexandra Kollontai, F. Engles, Mother Jones, Emma Goldman and Marx, writings that I think better illustrate what is at stake in the contested early development of Western society.

I also tend to include a short piece or two by Ibn Khaldun, to stimulate comparative discussion on in what sorts of societies it is possible or common to recognize societies qua res.

As you can see from my substitution of Kollontai, Mother Jones and Goldman, I would suggest considering expanding the sociological canonical classical timeline to include selected writings of some more and important early-20th century non-elite radical extenders of Enlightenment, such as Fanon, Gandhi and Gramsci, whose contributions are mighty but who fit less easily within the contemporary, post-Holocaust, imperial-capitalist postmodern, conservative-ascendant era theoretical traditions and preoccupations.

Modification suggestions aside (Who can resist? It's a textbook!), this is the best sociological theory textbook I've found. I congratulate the author, and I'm glad it's out there.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in 1903, Bowen's engaging 10th Molly Murphy mystery (after 2010's The Last Illusion) finds the maverick New York City PI at a major personal turning point. Her impending marriage to Capt. Daniel Sullivan of the NYPD will, at his insistence, mark an end to her sleuthing career, but she can't resist taking on one last case. After a powerful and affluent Chinatown businessman, Lee Sing Tai, asks her to locate a missing piece of valuable jade jewelry, Murphy soon ascertains that the less than forthcoming Lee really wants her to trace the missing bride he recently purchased in China. Searching for Lee's bride while keeping her activities a secret from her fianc is a considerable challenge for Molly, who also ends up with a murder to solve. Molly's compassion and pluck should attract more readers to this consistently solid historical series. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Just weeks before she is to marry New York police captain Daniel Sullivan in 1903, private investigator Molly Murphy leaves the sewing of her trousseau in the capable hands of her future mother-in-law (who bemoans Mollys woeful stitchery skills) and takes on one last case, having promised Daniel shed stop working once theyve wed. Powerful Chinatown businessman Lee Sing Tai hires Molly to find his missing bride, a commission she is loath to fulfill upon learning that the bride is actually a concubine obtained from China solely to give Lee (whose holdings include brothels and opium dens) a son and heir. When Lee is found dead after a fall from his rooftop, Molly is relieved of her obligation. But when the death is ruled a murder, initially raising the possibility of tong wars, the bridebeing sheltered by Mollybecomes a prime suspect. The tenth entry (after The Last Illusion, 2010) in this engaging, award-winning series captures early-twentieth-century New York; touches on the immigrant experience during that era; and brings the case to a satisfying conclusion, leaving open the equally compelling mystery of what lies ahead for the independent-minded Molly. --Michele Leber

Bless the Molly Murphy Mysteries
By Ross A. Hugovidal
Welcome back to one of the finest authors of the traditional/cozy style mystery now writing. The award-winning Bowen's Molly Murphy historical mystery series is unmatched in painting a textured, meticulous portrait of turn-of-the-century New York City, and especially the immigrant communities who made it tick. Her sleuth, the "feisty" Molly Murphy is a nuanced character any modern reader can get behind, while reveling in the details of Old New York. And this page-turner delivers, as Bless the Bride pits Molly against the Tong, yep the Tong, while posing the question, "Is Molly meant for matrimony?" Without giving anything away, Bowen appears poised to take the series in an entirely new direction, and I for one am buying a trolley ticket for the ride.

Molly Fits in a Case Before She Marries
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
It's just a matter of weeks before Molly Murphy is to marry Daniel Sullivan, and she is supposed to be spending time with Daniel's mother in Westchester County working on her wedding dress. But she can't resist coming back to New York City when her dear friends Sid and Gus promise to throw a wedding party for her.

She's also tempted by the prospect of taking on one last case. Lee Sing Tai, a powerful man in Chinatown, wants Molly to find something of value that has gone missing. While the task looks impossible on the surface, she digs in and actually manages to make some progress. But the more progress she makes, the more she begins to regret taking this case. Is there a way she can get out of it, especially after a murder takes place?

It's hard to believe this is the 10th book in this historical series. I just can't believe I've been reading them that long. Don't worry about the series losing its spark, however. The world of 1903 New York city is once again brought o vivid life.

The story was so compelling that I had a hard time putting the book down because I had to know how Molly would get herself out of this predicament. Yet it all comes together in a satisfying climax. In fact, the last 10 pages had me smiling the entire time.

Sid and Gus make more than a brief appearance, and it was great to see more of them. And Molly is growing both in deductive skills but also as a person who thinks about her actions. Okay, so she usually thinks about things after the fact, but even that is a step forward for her.

I loved every page of this novel. Fortunately, the next is already being written. Now I just have to wait until it actually gets published.

strong historical mystery
By A Customer
In 1903, the marriage between private investigator Molly Murphy and NYPD Captain Daniel Sullivan is coming soon. He expects her to behave like a wife and not a detective; his mom also implores her to act accordingly. Shockingly Molly seems to acquiesce.

Wealthy Chinese businessman Lee Sing Tai asks Molly to help him find a missing valuable jade. Although she believes her client is omitting much of the story, she agrees as she rationalizes her promise to no longer sleuth begins after the marriage though she hides her activity from Daniel. Molly thinks Lee is actually seeking his missing bride who ran away. However, she has no idea how a Chinese female who does not speak English hides in plain sight in New York when Asian women are not allowed outside without a chaperone. As Molly searches for the young runaway, she fears she will bring further harm to the bride Lee bought in and brought from China.

This is a strong entry in one of the best historical mystery series on the market. The investigation is top rate as Molly goes from searching for a runaway bride that has her pondering the parallels to her own fate as a wife in which she is expected to give up her freedom to detect. As the heroine conceals her case from her fianc while wondering whether marriage means being The Last Illusion living In a Gilded Cage, her case turns lethal. Rhys Bowen provides a great early twentieth century Molly Murphy mystery.

I'm very glad I have discovered essential oils
By Tyler
I purchased this book last week. I'm not much of a reader (more a skimmer) but I didn't want to put the book down. I learned so much about Essential Oils in general and the difference between Young Living's and other brands. I learned a little bit of science and A LOT of Bible! I'm not sure if we were taught about essential oils in Sunday School when I was growing up but we should have been. There are so many stories of how they were used buy Jesus, his disciples, etc. It made me wonder why many Christians don't believe in natural healing when it has been given to us by God to use. They believe in prayer but not the sources of plants.
Anyway, I'm very glad I have discovered essential oils, their power, and that I chose a company that stands behind their mission of making 100% essential oils (not 50% essential oil & 50% other).
If you are interested in essential oils and would like an easy and fun read, please consider this book.
