Jane Austen for chidlers and ESL folks

My 8-year-old developed a keen interest in Jane Austen after having seen several movie versions, but can't quite manage to read it yet. The Penguin Readers series limits Austen's story to about 2500 different vocabulary words and a manageable abridgement. It's a little TOO hard for an 8-year-old but would suit a reader at the 4-6 grade level or an adult reader looking to learn English. The cover is a tie-in with the BBC mini-series starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (but it is not a "novelization" of the screenplay but a genuine although extreme abridgement of the original).

It doesn't retain any (or, anyway, much) of Miss Austen's handsome literary style, but the characters manage to keep hold of their customary wit and charm. It would be great to see anyone capable of reading the original do so instead, but if reading this version leads Austen newbies in that direction eventually, I'm all for it-- certainly having an 8-year-old read Austen Lite is better than having her read "The Bratz Paint Their Toenails" or whatever else passes for girl's literature these days!

About the Author

Lord Mahon (1805–1875), the parliamentary name of Philip Henry, Fifth Earl Stanhope, was a prominent British politician and historian. Through his efforts the National Portrait Gallery was founded. Among his many writings, Life of William Pitt remains a standard work.

Jon C. N. Coulston is Lecturer in Ancient History and Archaeology at University of St Andrews. His is editor of Ancient Rome: The Archaeology of the Eternal City

Outstanding Social and Military History

The life of Belisarius, a late-Georgian (not Victorian) history in the vein of Gibbons, is the story of one of the most interesting figures of late antiquity. The author does a great job of combining Byzantine court intrigue and gripping battle accounts--the entrance into Naples through an abandoned aqueduct and the seige of Rome are particularly well drawn--to chronicle the amazing military campaigns and tribulations of Belisarius. This is a sumptuous narrative--old fashioned in the best sense. These is also a very interesting subplot of the struggle between the Arian and Catholic faiths; also, the suggestion that Belisarius' defeat of the Vandals and subsequent abandonment by Byzantium led to a power vacuum in North Africa on the eve of the Islamic conquests. Professor Coulston explains in his introduction how the sources mined by Mahon are impressive for their breadth and range--and that is what makes the book relevant to the modern audience. "Lord Mahon closely attended the literary sources so in the biography we not only have a powerful story, well told, but also a solid work of history standing alongside, and interacting with, the work of other nineteenth century historians." Since the book was written more than 150 years ago, Coulston also provides a helpful "Further Reading" section.

When I decided to post a review, I became a bit concerned after reading the review below. Is this history really that "politically incorrect?" Well, I went back through the book carefully and I was relieved to find that the reviewer's claims are specious. I found no consistent allusion to "north versus south" or "east versus west." In fact to Mahon's credit, writing in an age where it was common to make sweeping generalizations based on prejudices, most of the "barbarians" are from the north. He does express dismay at the conditions along the Italian peninsula, but any criticism of Mahon's observations (and support from ancient sources) has to be viewed in the context of the time. (It would be another thirty years after the book first appeared before Italy would become a unified country.) But all of this is minor and takes up exceedingly little space in this engrossing narrative. According to Coulston--and from the notes in the book--Lord Mahon was very well traveled for his age, and he is sympathetic to other cultures. If any charge of "political incorrectness" can be leveled at Mahon it is that he plays into centuries-old mysogyny, blaming the influence of the wives of Belisarius and Justinian for most bad decisions. Enjoy this book for what it is: it is a great read, a classic account of a very interesting historical figure.

19th century scholarly rigor

This book is the only scholarly biography I'm aware of that deals with the life of the great Roman general Belisarius. As the author points out, Belisarius was one of the few great men in history who deserved to wear a crown but never did. He has been called the greatest Roman general of them all, having defeated the Persians, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths in turn with forces that would have been considered paltry by Caesar. He achieved what might have been his most glorious victory of all near the end of his life when he turned away an invading army of Huns from the very walls of Constantinople with a scant 300 veterans and some ill-equipped city-dwellers.

The depth of scholarly research needed to produce this volume is impressive. Lord Mahon cast a wide net to include a wealth of citations from historians both ancient and more contemporary to himself. Let the reader beware, however--Lord Mahon includes a number of references written in the original Latin and Greek so a working knowledge of those two languages is helpful but not necessary. My only minor criticism of Lord Mahon's scholarship is that he falls prey to one of the bugbears of his times--antipathy toward Roman Catholicism in general and the Papacy in particular. While his animus toward Catholics was not nearly as pronounced as some of his contemporaries, I still found it irksome in the few instances where it reared its ugly head.

I recommend the edition of The Life of Belisarius (Christian Roman Empire Series) by Evolution Publishing. It is a completely unabridged version of the 1848 edition of the work and is not a facsimile. The clumsy footnotes of the original have been helpfully reset as chapter endnotes. It includes a reference list of modern sources in English and additional notes and citations which help bring the text up-to-date. If, like me, you find Belisarius to be a fascinating historical figure, you might also like Belisarius: The First Shall Be Last by Paolo Belzoni which is a novel about the young general's early years.

Do NOT buy the hardcover!

I gave this review 5 stars because the book itself is outstanding and many of the criticisms on here are asinine. However, do not, under any circumstance, order the hardcover edition from Kessinger Publishing. It is an abomination that looks like it was put together from a (crummy) laser printer in someone's basement. Many of the pages aren't even legible --and I mean that seriously: you literally cannot read the text on many pages in the first half of the book. I'm returning my copy to Amazon and they need to stop selling books from this publisher. Just because someone sets up a publishing company reprinting public domain books in their mom's garage doesn't mean Amazon needs to sell their garbage.

Remarkably detailed yet thoroughly readable

I had no idea "fracking" had its origins in the nineteenth century or that "moonlighting" came from the early practice of the clandestine use of explosives for drilling set off at night. More importantly to anyone who wants to understand the positives (cheap energy & domestic jobs) and the negatives (possible pollution & environmental risks) is the balanced way Greg Zuckerman explores the history, pros & cons of what is arguably the most important economic issue of the next ten years. He does a great job of profiling the early wildcatters looking for a new way to release energy from the bowels of the earth, capturing the romance and swashbuckling personalities of some of these larger than life characters. At the same time he understands and illustrates the financial side and implications of the actions taken by these companies as they morphed from tiny E&P outfits to energy behemoths risking billions of investor dollars. My favorite sections deal with Aubrey McClendon and the story of Chesapeake Energy and Charif Souki the founder of Cheniere Energy who has the audacity to conceive of the United States as an EXPORTER of natural gas and energy to the world a few short years after politicians and pundits decried American dependence on foreign energy imports.

It's a remarkable story told remarkably well. If you want to understand energy dynamics going forward in the 21st century, this is an incredibly useful guidebook.

Live from the Permian Basin

Because I live in an oilfield community and because I don't rely on the oilfield to put food on the table, I found this book extremely interesting. I'm an educator who has at times supplemented my income by working summers and weekends in the oilfield. Since I had to have a Commercial Drivers Licence to drive a bus as a part of my real job, it wasn't much of a stretch to get a tractor/trailer and tanker endorsement and haul water into and out of the oilfield. I've even hauled water to frac jobs. I've hauled water away from frac jobs. Thankfully I wasn't around much during frac jobs as they are incredibly noisy. This gives me a little different perspective maybe than the avg reader.

I've heard of Chesapeake and Sandridge. Actually know some people who work for them. It was incredibly interesting to learn how those two companies came in to being. Judging from the book I'd say that Awbrey McClendon and Tom Ward are borderline crooked, but my limited experience in the oilfield tells me that that's pretty normal behavior at the top of the ladder. There couldn't be as many crooked people at the bottom of the ladder if it didn't get a little crooked as you went up. I've heard of EOG and XTO and Devon. I know some people who work for them as well, so it was interesting to see how they fit into the picture.

I would've liked to have been a fly on the wall when Harold Hamm met with Obama in the WH. I'd like to think that Obama wouldn't have the gall to tell Hamm, "You didn't build that." but I'd proably be wrong. Oil and Water to the extreme.

My only complaint about the book is that I think it's very difficult for east coast writers to fully understand Texas and Oklahoma culture. Zuckerman missed a few details that I caught, I'm sure there's more. He talks about a manager at Chevron being different from all the rest of the managers because he was an outsider. The guy in question started at Gulf which was acquired by Chevron in about '82 or so. That's like calling someone who was born in Alaska in '57 an outsider. Also, he referred to West Texas Intermediate as West Texas International. Kind of a glaring mistake for one of the world's two benchmark crudes. I coached across town from MOJO during the year that Buzz Bissinger spent in Odessa when he wrote "Friday Night Lights". I actually chatted him up at a New Year's eve party that year. For the most part, he got it all right. The book was factual. But he never really understood the culture of the community of Odessa. And because of that I feel like he misrepresented the community to a nationwide audience. The movie based on the book was a bad carricature. Based on the two errors noted above, I'm guessing that Zuckerman's book is pretty damned factual, but I have some doubts as to whether he can truly have the cultural understanding that it takes to completely close the deal. He may be misrepresenting the top end of the oil patch to his nationwide audience somewhat.

This book is funny, entertaining & detailed - basically another amazing book from Zuckerman.

Much like 'The Greatest Trade Ever', this book is about bucking the odds, high risk/high return, near misses & making amazing breakthroughs. It's much more about the unique entrepreneurial people involved than it is about the science behind a process that is leading the US back to energy production self-sufficiency. The author is unparalleled at exploring these characters while weaving together the details of a very disparate, but wildly entertaining story about a group of people who essentially changed the world. One aspect I really enjoyed was the humor. There are laugh-out-loud moments in the book within the details of these compelling, quirky people. Hilarious. It keeps you hooked on the characters & is very compelling to read.
