The devotionals bring hope and guidance with godly solutions that are very relevant to the day-to-day challenges inmates and their loved ones face. I received this book in good shipping condition.
Having read through this book for content I can see it would be worthwhile for any family who has a family member incarcerated in jail/prison to give it to the prison chaplain to be passed onto the family member in jail/prison.
It gives spiritual support for any long timer who has found the Lord Christ and has decided to turn his life around but of course he has to do his "time"

If You Use R Code for Statistics, This is a Solid Reference

I'll say up front: This was a tough book to rate. However, upon reflection and a careful re-reading of the introductory matter, I decided on full marks. Mr. Lewis makes no pretense this is a textbook, and I'm sure it wouldn't suffice in that role. Rather, "100 Statistical Tests in R" provides a solid reference, with many worked examples, on inference procedures that many scientists and researchers need. Usually they need them without all the theoretical trappings, and that's where this book excels: "Just the tests, ma'am."

The presentation is spare and clean, with solid literature research. The R code appears to be up to date (at time of release, anyway), and package references are valid. An amazingly wide range of examples is shown, from communicating with whales to stock trading, game theory to medical applications.

My concerns are not with the quality of the test procedures or the code. I tried quite a few of the procedures, and found them to be functional and clear. The organization of the tests into groups covering correlation/causation, hypothesis testing, independence, and more is useful, and clearly shown early in the volume. I especially enjoy having more than one option even within a single test.

I am always a bit worried about efforts to enable sophisticated analyses and inference without sufficient context or support for the less-sophisticated researcher, who is tempted to use the procedure as a "black box" and then believe they know enough to decide and act. Many of these tests are like carving an object with a supremely sharp knife; if you're not a master carver you can lose some skin, or perhaps a finger. For those who need these tests but haven't serious grounding in their foibles, I strongly recommend developing a relationship with a practicing statistician and seeking guidance.

These concerns do not reduce the usefulness of this presentation of statistical tests. The author makes no claims about one's ability to correctly infer in a particular situation. His guidance is otherwise.

If you're looking for a listing of the mathematical equations for all these tests, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, if you're in a technical, research or development setting and use R (or have access to R coders to help), I heartily recommend this book to you.

A Handy Desk Reference Guide

This is a very good list of statistical tests. It provides some basic application and usage examples and then an example of how to run the test in R.

I would suggest you have a solid understanding of statistics before purchasing as you will both have to know what you're looking for and the underlying concepts behind them; this is not "Statistics in R for Dummies". A knowledge of R is not required, but should of course be reccomended...

You get a lot more than the $3 price tag out of this, if you know how to use it....

About the Author

HLA Hart was Professor of Jurisprudence at Oxford University and the Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford. He authored The Concept of Law one of the seminal works of English-language jurisprudence. He passed away in 1992.

Leslie Green is Professor of the Philosophy of Law and Pauline and Max Gordon Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. He is the author The Authority of the State (Clarendon Press, 1990), and is the co-editor of Oxford Studies in the Philosophy of Law (with Brian Leiter).

Joseph Raz has been teaching at Oxford University since 1972. He has been Professor of the Philosophy of Law there since 1985, and Research Professor since 2006; he has also been Professor at Columbia University since 2002. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has published a number of books including Between Authority and Interpretation (OUP, 2009) and The Authority of Law (OUP, 2009).

Penelope A. Bulloch is an emeritus fellow of Balliol College, Oxford.

This book was the center of my law school course on jurisprudence (legal philosophy). It was the best (and made the most sense) of any book I read in law school. I won't be surprised if 500 years from now law students are still reading this book alongside Aristotle and the other greats.

Great introduction for the beginner

I write this review from the view point of a lay reader generally interested in law, justice and political philosophy.

I found this book very lucid, well organized and comprehensive. Hart presents concept of a law in a descriptive manner as it is generally practiced. He develops the concept with comparing and differentiating it from commands and orders. He then traces its development from simple primitive societies to the complex realities of our times. He proposes that laws are union of,i) rules which govern individual behaviour and: ii) rules for making such rules.
He also discusses relationship of law with morals and cocerns of substantive versus formal justice in a legal system.

The book acknowledges prevalence of various conceptions of law in different societies but does not make any value judgement about them.

This edition contains a post script in which Hart has replied to his critics. I found this portion rather technical and think that it can be safely skipped by a general reader.

I recommend this book to any one interested in understanding cotemporary concept of law and legal system.

Must have for PDF Forms Developers

I've spent the last couple months using the PDF Forms Bible and have found it to be an invaluable resource for creating e-forms with Acrobat and LiveCycle Designer. I highly recommend this book for anyone from beginners to advanced users of Acrobat who are creating interactive forms. This book covers A to Z just about all the topics, features, and issues you'll come across while creating and deploying your form. I especially like that both PDF forms technologies (AcroForms and XFA Forms) are covered and explained, as this has been a source of great confusion in the Acrobat community. If you are a PDF forms designer or want/need to become one for your work, this is a MUST have book in your toolkit. The ROI for this reference will be almost immediate.

Didactic

The first half of the book is about Acrobat AcroForms and the second is about LiveCycle Designer XFA forms. Both halves cover their respective subject in excellent detail with a good balance of tutorial, step-by-step procedures, illustrations, and sample files on the CD to supplement the text. The two authors set out to publish a comprehensive book about PDF forms, and that's exactly what they have accomplished. See the Table of Contents.

Kudos, also, to the copy and other editors. They obviously put in some work, which is why this book reads like English with familiar spelling and grammar. The sample files on the CD are indispensable and the PDF copy of the book enabled me to read it in huge typeface so that I didn't have to squint like I was searching for molecules.

I would gladly have paid $100 for this book. For this novice, it reads like Agatha Christie and this review has distracted me long enough. Excuse me...

Comprehensive, excellent resource

I've used (or at least tried to use) a couple of other books on form design using Acrobat. Wish I had started with this one - it is excellent.

The book is very well organized with extensive cross references. You can skip to whatever section/topic you need help with and have the benefit of clear cross references to past sections for background info that would be helpful. Both traditional AcroForms and LiveCycle Designer forms are covered.

The Java examples are excellent - they alone are worth the price of the book. After trying in vain to get a handle on writing scripts using the Adobe materials, I finally get how to do it! The included CD-ROM is also a major help since it has the actual forms/code/examples explored in the text.

The writing is clear and easy to understand without being overly simplistic or redundant. The book emphasizes a step-by-step approach so even the most complex tasks get distilled down to manageable chunks.

My only quibble is the font size in the book. My aging eyes are not compatible with such a small font. It would also be helpful if it was a large format publication that was bound in a way that you could keep it open to a page while working on the PC without having to do major damage to the spine.

But, the content is why you'd purchase this publication, and along those lines, it easily deserves five stars.
