Growing up in the early-eighteenth century as the privileged only child of a household slave and her plantation owner on a tiny West Indian island, Joseph Boulogne heard music from around the globe, and he learned to play violin. After his father took him and his mother to Paris, Boulogne lived free, although he still suffered discrimination as a �mulatto.� As he grew up, he became a gifted, feted student who was taught by two great masters and given a beautiful instrument before he played first violin with a Paris orchestra and eventually became its conductor. By 30, he was a star, the first musician of color to play for royalty and a renowned composer. An author�s note fills in more facts, but unfortunately, there are no sources included in this picture-book biography about a figure rarely featured in books for youth. The full-page, richly colored paintings give a strong sense of the changing settings, from plantation to palace, but most moving are the close-ups of the extraordinary musician with his fingers on the violin strings. An Excellent Book

I have read "Before There Was Mozart" at least three times. I bought one for myself and one for my grandson. As a former school counselor who helped counselees to start thinking about careers, stepping out on courage, embracing racial indifferences, believing in yourself, the importance of encouragement, how to be persistent and courageous, find ways to be uniquely different, etc., I find this book to be an excellent tool for ages six years to adult. It's great for parents to learn the importance of positive words spoken into the lives of their children, also. I love this book. It is on my coffee table and made available for anyone who visits me to read. My forty-one (41) years old son introduced me to this book. I love it! It is a Christmas gift that I will be sharing with many loved ones this year.

Beautifully illustrated and a well told story! Excellent read for ages 5 and up. Adults who want there children to be introduced to the complexity of western history will enjoy reading and sharing this book with their children.

My piano teacher loved this book as did I. We were both so pleased to learn of this young man's plight and his tremendous success considering the circumstances of his birth and life. Thank you for sharing this book with music lovers. We will share it with all of the children and even adults in our sphere of influence.

50 years on, this book is still fresh

This book is a firsthand account of leading blues musicians during their prime in the 1960s. Along with Amiri Baraka's "Blues People," Charlie Keil's "Urban Blues" was a groundbreaking attempt to take black popular music seriously. "Urban Blues" was one of the first music studies based on fieldwork in an American city, and it remains fresh today because it offers a window into the music and lives of BB King, Bobbie "Blue" Bland, Ray Charles, and other musicians who are no longer with us. In my favorite passage, Keil is waiting to interview BB King while Martin Luther King Jr. is giving his "I Have a Dream Speech" on the television set on the tour bus. A timeless classic.

After recently rereading this book, I'm impressed with how well Keil's book holds up today. Not only does he provide a good historical outline of ways that urban blues traditions have developed, but he also provides good descriptions of blues scenes from the 1950s and 60s. The interviews are irreplaceable resources and terrific reading. I especially appreciated Keil's description of blues concerts within overseas' tours, as Keil satirically nails the exoticism, primitivism, and other less-than-flattering ideologies that continue to emerge among blues fans even today. Keil's wit complements his good scholarship. His outline of various blues styles is an excellent resource for those who wish to compare styles and gain a sense of artistic distinctiveness. Although some of the analysis, and Keil's tone of writing, doesn't fully hold up with what we've learned about blues in the last 40 years, this book remains a good entry point for those who want an overview of what's come to be called "Chicago Blues." One major issue since Keil first wrote the book is the need to recognize that the "Chicago Style" really started in Memphis and various and sundry points South. Readers who want the bigger story need to check out what was going on outside of the windy city in more detail than what is provided in urban blues. There also are a number of good books on the history of record companies and numerous biographies and autobiographies of blues players that further complement, develop, and occasionally critique Keil's study.

The Book You Start With To Understand Rock 'n Roll

Unfortunately, most people who actually know something about RnR and RnB are too old to look like they do to younger readers who think Buddy Guy is first generation. Most thirtysomethings (or fortysomethings) think rock is rock 'n roll and rock 'n roll is rhythm and blues and rhythm and blues is blues.
Today, the actual people who created modern urban blues forms are unknown to young rock revisionists. But they weren't unknown to Charles Keil. He traces and authoritatively compares the various styles of blues, showing that the electric forms that led to rock were as important and significant as the blues music put out in the twenties and thirties.
Duh, you say. Well when this book was written, there were no books on the subject of modern (1950s-1960s) blues around. Especially none written for a black or knowledgable white audience. This is the book that started the black-oriented musical criticism necessary to understand the main tap root to rock 'n roll.
Although the first of its kind, it still remains fresh with very little material the would need updating today. When I got my copy in the mid sixties, I stopped everything and read it cover to cover underlining all the important parts. As I say, Urban Blues was the first and still one of the few to get it right. Bedrock.

About the Author

Fabrizio Benedetti, Professor of Neurophysiology and Human Physiology, Department of Neuroscience, University of Turin Medical School, Italy

He received the Medical Doctor (MD) degree in 1981 from the University of Turin Medical School. In 1984, he received a Silbert International Award from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA and was a visiting professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Texas in Dallas. He has been Professor of Neurophysiology and Human Physiology at the University of Turin Medical School since 1999. He has been a member of the six-strong group on placebo of the Mind-Brain-Behavior Initiative at Harvard University, and a consultant for the Placebo Project at the US National Institute of Health. He has been nominated a member of the Academy of Europe and of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain. His current scientific interests are the placebo effect across diseases, pain in dementia, and intraoperative neurophysiology for mapping the human brain.

I personally found the book somewhat condescending in good western medical tradition. Statements such as: "The history of medicine is basically a history of placebos, as most medical interventions were nothing but placebos..." badly misjudge herbal medicine traditions worldwide. The scope of the book is very narrow and does not consider "mind control of the body" knowledge of other cultures. Nor does it recognize the considerable effect of hormesis on the subject.

Eye Opening and Stereotype Shattering

I am a pre-service teacher with an endorsement in special education. Even after being in the program for so long, this book was eye opening, truly. It's very easy to read, and offers a large array of points of views in the chapters, along with resources to strengthen understanding. I considered myself a very progressive person in terms of people with disabilities, and reading this book made me realize that some of the beliefs and things that I say and do are not as "progressive" as I think they are. They were just reinforcing stereotypes that I had never even thought of. I really feel like I will be not only a better teacher because of this book, but a better person.

Informative and Full of Ideas

This is an excellent guide for Special Educators, regular classroom teachers, and anybody with an interest in helping kids learn. Using nicely readable prose, the authors provide many useful insights into education, helping students with special needs, and the oft-prejudicial views of both society and even some educators. The authors also provide a host of modifications, adaptations, lesson plans, and useful ideas for both special education and classroom teachers. Their upbeat manner inspires without ignoring the challenges that perplex even the most capable teachers. I'd have liked more insight on making connections with those hardest-to-reach students, another perplexing challenge. Still, this is an excellent guide for current and future teachers, plus anybody interested in the future of education. We recently read this book in a college class and almost everybody liked its upbeat ideas and realistic approach.

This book is a must-read for every person who is touched by disability in their lives. Special educators, physical therapists, persons with disabilities, etcetera, must add this enjoyable, insightful and revolutionary read on what it means to have a disability and how our thinking needs to change about disability. I am studying to become a special educator and this book literally changed my life by forever and profoundly deepening my perspective on persons with disabilities.
