None are better than the Supernatural

For the record, I am an absolute, unapologetic, died-in-the-wool Supernatural fan. And I mean FAN! I have all the DVD's for Seasons 1-10. I have several books about Supernatural (most of which I have bought here at Amazon.com). None are better than the Supernatural: The Official Companion books. I have each book from Season 1 to Season 7. They provide a succinct synopsis of each episode along with insights from the actors (not just the two very excellent stars, Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles) but even from many of the actors whether in continuing roles or those who appeared for a few or just one episode). There are comments from the various directors, the show's originator, Eric Kripke, the various writers. There are sidebars describing how certain episodes came into being, the difficulties encountered and resolved in filming the many episodes, and some of the mythologies encompassed in Supernatural (and the embellishments given to them by the show's writers). I have waited for Seasons 8, 9 and 10, but they have yet to appear. It may be that there will be no more of these Episode guides but I have read and re-read Seasons 1-7 many times. The books are well worth the price for rabid Supernatural fans like me who want to know everything and anything about this remarkable television series.

SUPERNATURAL - GRAVE DISCOVERIES

For fans of SUPERNATURAL, this series of Official Companion books is exactly what it claims to be: an excellent partner to the shows themselves, sharing with the reader the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the making of this addictive TV show. This fourth volume follows the same formula as the previous three: a synopsis and discussion of every episode, a generous helping of color photos featuring the cast, plenty of black and white photos spread throughout the book, essays on the various monsters that populate the season, discussions about the show's crew, and chapters on the season's main characters (featuring comments by the actors who played them.)

This book is fun to read and author Nicholas Knight does a very good job of bringing context and depth to the material included. It's worth noting that these books do not shy away from the cast, creators, or crew taking a critical view of their work as well as sometimes praising it, which helps to add dimension to the experience of discovering what makes this show tick. You will also find a complete cast listing for every episode.

One word of caution: don't read this book until you've seen the shows. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the fifth volume in the series. The journey of Sam and Dean Winchester continues to be a fascinating one to follow and this book adds additional layers to the paths they traverse. Enjoy!

This book is awesome. I wished I could of found a new one but this version was in good shape. Looks of unknown facts and a personal insight to the story. Over all great experience but it would of been nice if the product had been sent a little more secure through the mail.

Broken. Disheveled. Discouraged. Barely clinging to hope. Those are the words that encapsulate where I found myself as I picked up Priscilla Shirer’s book, Fervent. I felt broken by the looming threat of marital dissolution. Earlier in 2015, my husband and I separated and I found myself contemplating divorce as the year neared its cyclic close. I looked in the mirror and I was emotionally and spiritually disheveled from the harsh beating inflicted by gusty winds of uncertainty and icy storms of confusion. Discouragement over the future lurked along my horizon and I was barely clinging to hope. I sat alone in my small, one bedroom apartment and, through tears, opened the pages of one of the most life changing books I’ve read. Ever.
Immediately, I was incited against the dark forces that had held me captive for the last year. Things about myself that I had forgotten began to resurface in my memories. New words emerged. Called. Equipped. Armed. Empowered. Only moments into the pages, a shift began to occur in my thinking and suddenly, I felt a surge of strength. Of passion. Of purpose. Of anger. How dare the enemy aim to rob me of not only my identity in Christ, but also all of those things for which Christ died on my behalf. To hell with you, devil, became the new message ringing in my ears as I began to take captive every defeating and disheartening thought that had occupied my mind prior to opening the Spirit saturated pages of Shirer’s book. To the one who is about to give up. To her who is considering quitting. It was written to the defeated, the hopeless, and discouraged. It was written to me. So if that’s also you…if you’ve lost your fight, forgotten your position of victory, or feel your candle is about to burn out, allow me to recommend Priscilla Shirer’s Fervent. Reading it will leave you changed. Hungry for victory. Angry over the enemy’s lies. Fervent in prayer.

Awesome Prayer Resource for Moms

I was so excited to see a new book on prayer by Priscilla Shirer, Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer.

Full confession here, I am rather the Priscilla Shirer fan. I find her books to be direct, practical and very scripture based. Having said that, this may just be my absolute favorite of all of her books. I judge how well I like a Christian book by how many little sticky flags I place on the pages. I often will quote these thoughts in my ministry (giving full credit of course). This one is covered in little purple flags!

I love the organization of this book. As usual, Ms. Shirer is very organized in the way she writes. She begins with a basic coverage of prayer and specifically regaining your passion for prayer. She then covers nine specific categories she believes we should be addressing in our prayer life: our focus, our identity, our family, our past, our fears, our purity, our pressures, our hearts and our relationships.

Each chapter begins with a little "If I were your enemy" thought. I loved these and have already quoted one on the Parenting Like Hannah Facebook page. It's a great way for her to frame a la C.S. Lewis how Satan must view his plans to derail us from the life God meant for us to live. The chapter is filled with her personal experiences and her insights based on scripture.

One of my favorite parts of this book is that it is filled with scripture. She not only gives the citations within the book, but provides the quotes as well. This is always my pet peace about Christian books - having to flip back and forth within the book or between the book and the Bible to check out scriptures. Kudos to her for making it easy. Sometimes she adds her own thoughts after the scripture, but often she lets them stand on their own.

I won't steal her thunder by quoting lots of passages. Let me just say this book is very practical, very well organized, very thought provoking and very scripture based. If you read my blog regularly, I rarely say you must absolutely own a book. I want to be respectful of your finances. I often say this book is worth reading, but to me that is very different from being a "must read". This in my opinion is one of those "must reads". It even has a tear out section in the back for prayers you can take with you wherever you go.

If you want help with your prayer life, I am sure there are plenty of resources that may help you. I personally would choose to purchase this one. I really think it has the tools you need to enrich, enhance and even jump start your prayer life.

Pershall's down-to-earth style is tempered by poetic moments of insight; she treats the subjects of birth and death with extraordinary grace. As Samantha's life is touched by her brother's brief existence, readers will be touched by the truths revealed throughout this book. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7-12-- Through first-person narration, Samantha recounts several years of her life in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. During those years Samantha's mother has a baby, Nicholas, whose birth creates some upheaval in an already uncomfortable family situation, and whose death by drowning at age two causes the family to fall apart. In the course of the story, readers are confronted with issues of abortion, work outside the home, pregnancy and natural childbirth (presented in a vivid and moving manner), death, dysfunctional and failed marriages, cynicism about relationships, the trauma of moving away from a secure neighborhood and loved ones, adolescent friendships and love, close interactions with teachers, and ways of dealing with grief. While Samantha's feelings and actions are clearly described and her relationship with her mother and with her friends is realistically portrayed, the introduction of so many plot elements and the contrived flashbacks used to reveal them keep the story from flowing smoothly. Because of the density of events, characters' growth has to be explained more often than it is revealed. The ending of the story, as Samantha flies off to spend a year with her grandmother in the United States, with her grief still new and her reconciliations with others somewhat superficial, suggests, unfortunately, that to take the "high road" of the title may be to walk away from things that hurt. This guy is an editor? Seriously?

While this book contains valuable information regarding the biotechnology industry, the writing format is awful. I find it hard to believe this author is the Cheif Editor of a journal, simply due to the excessive amount of errors found frequently throughout the text. We are talking blatant spelling errors, punctuation faux pas, missing words, extra unnecessary phrases in sentences, and misused words (like bases instead of basis). I can certainly understand if the author is a non-native English speaker (which may or may not be the case), but someone, SOMEONE, should have noticed these errors prior to publication. If there was an "editor", which I can't find any info about, this person was sleeping on the job. Again, great information but the errors are distracting and take away from the subject matter.
Further, the quality of the book binding is defective. This brand new book has a gap in the glue of the binding. If you open the book the the middle pages, you can see this gap.

Rebecca L. Busby has 30 years of writing/editing experience in the energy industry, starting with the Institute of Gas Technology in 1975. Her background also includes the Gas Technology Institute, where she edited its premier magazine and covered research on fuel cells, alternative-fuel vehicles, power generation, and other natural gas applications. An independent writer/editor since 1989, her publications have featured energy technologies such as micropower, wind turbines, and solar energy. She also edited PennWell's Natural Gas in Nontechnical Language and has written its annual International Petroleum Encyclopedia for the past four years.

It's a good book

It is a good book about natural gas, but as I understand it does not have an author and Ms. Busby was an editor of it. The book is based on educational materials of Institute of Gas Technology and is in some parts rather fragmented (i.e. I had a lot of questions at the end of a chapter, which were not laid out) and also in many ways repeats information, graphs, etc from other books, published by Penwell in their Non-Technical Series, especially from the book written by Norman J. Hyne. As result of these repetitions, the value of new information from the book was a little lower, since I read already almost entire non-technical series. However, if you did not read the book of Hyne and the book on oil and gas pipelines by Miesner, all material shall be new. As usual for all non-technical series, the book's target audience is not people who work in gas field, as it might look a little too basic to them.
