About the Author
Philip Sloane, MD, MPH, is Elizabeth and Oscar Goodwin Distinguished Professor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A geriatrician, he has served as medical director of several long-term care facilities and has co-authored "Primary Care Geriatrics, Dementia Units in Long-Term Care, " and the Alzheimer's Association's "Key Elements of Dementia Care." Dr. Sloane is nationally known for his work on the management of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

Initial impression.

I've just started reading this book. I'm an emergency doctor trying to get an impression of family medicine in the US. I have the kindle edition. The first thing I've noticed is that although there are references in the text, like this (3), they aren't linked to anything and the reference list is absent from either the end of the chapter or the book. As always, Amazon does a dismal job of making a textbook into an ebook, somehow managing to combine the worst of both worlds.

Poorly written, poorly edited

This book is nearly worthless. If you are looking to read 40 pages to learn 1 page worth of material, this may be for you. The book has so many typos it's infuriating. The question bank available on the online portion of the book is laughable, clearly nobody took 5 minutes to proofread it. It is pathetic.

So depending on your school, the entire rotation final may come right from this book, especially the statistics and guidelines. Not fun to read or memorize, not useful for patient care but essential to get more than a pass.
