Insightful general study of tribal societies in India

A collection of essays on an impossible subject. But Xaxa manages to give insights into these very different groups which we call "tribes". For Xaxa, the basic characteristic of "tribe" in India is that it is a society. He notes that historically, it is social differentiation that enables members of tribes to move up the ladder of cultural and economic development. Government policy, especially positive discrimination or "reservation", accelerates this differentiation. At the same time, these policies strengthen the case for a political articulation of identity of a tribal society as an undifferentiated whole.
Politics and identity can be a heady combination, but it is a relief that Xaxa avoids the anthropological and - to a lesser extent - the political jargon which makes many books on tribals hard to follow for the uninitiated. Some of these essays have been written as separate articles, which makes for some repetitions in the volume, but also for clarity of each essay. This collection of essays is wide ranging and shows a rare grasp of the subject. Xaxa has written a authoritative and insightful contemporary overview on the subject.
